Lincoln Park Zoo Boardwalk and Pavilion, Chicago, IL (Kara Boyd Design Team and Project Architect for Design Development)

Architect: Studio Gang Architects

Completed 2010

This project is the transformation of a dilapidated 19th-Century pond in Lincoln Park in order to enhance the Lincoln Park Zoo's image and mission by integrating education, habitat, sustainable practices, and architecture. The pond and its watershed were redesigned to re-naturalize the pond and the ecology within and around it: water filtration by vegetation, and re-establishment of native flora and fauna habitat.

A boardwalk made of recycled materials circumnavigates the pond as educational route, and an open-air pavilion provides a beloved classroom space and shelter.
